04.01.2024, 2023 marks a start-up boom with a record number of 51,637 companies founded in Switzerland. This represents a pleasing increase not only compared to the previous year, when 50,015 companies were registered, but also in a ten-year comparison. These impressive figures illustrate the continuous growth and increasing dynamism in the Swiss business environment.
New entries
The year 2023 ends with an increase of 7% in new companies, with a total of 4,694 new companies being registered. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous month, in which 4,394 new businesses were registered. However, the comparison to the previous year shows a slight decrease of 4%, when there were 4,897 new registrations.

If you look at the total number of new companies founded in 2023, you can see that with 51,637 new companies founded, the record value of 2021 with a total of 50,545 companies founded was exceeded. The difference here is 2%. A look at the last ten years shows the impressive growth of the Swiss corporate landscape. A total of 40,687 new companies were founded in 2013, which is 27% fewer than in 2023.

Deletions
The number of deletions rose again in December 2023 and amounted to 2,827. This corresponds to an increase of 5% compared to the previous month, when 2,689 deletions were registered. A look at the previous year also shows an increase. In December 2022, 2,622 deletions were made, an increase of 8%.
Since 2019, total deletions have continued to decline. A total of 30,721 deletions were registered in 2023, an increase of 10% compared to 2022. This marks a change in the previous downward trend in deletion numbers.

Mutations
The mutations reach a new high at the end of the year. In December 2023, 18,508 companies were mutated, an increase of 5% compared to November 2023, when 17,648 company mutations were registered. Of these, a total of 2,000 companies have decided to liquidate their company in December 2023. However, compared to 2022, there is a slight decrease of 1%. Looking at the annual totals, it is noticeable that mutations have increased steadily since 2017, with the exception of 2021. The ten- year comparison also shows a strong increase of 20%.
Principality of Liechtenstein
The Principality of Liechtenstein can also end 2023 on a positive note. In December 2023 there were 96 new companies founded. This is 85% more than the previous month. However, the mutations have decreased. 888 new mutations were recorded. A decrease of 5% compared to the previous month.
