03.05.2023, Zurich - April has a mind of its own, as is well known, but this year the Swiss corporate landscape is suffering significantly more than usual from the low after the first quarter. Both start-ups and mutations are at record lows, and the difference between start-ups and deletions has narrowed significantly compared to recent years. The effects of inflation and the consequences of the corona loans are becoming more and more noticeable for Swiss companies and result in bankruptcies and liquidations as well as a reduced desire to start up.

In April 2023, 3,725 new companies were founded. This is 26% less than in the previous month when a record 5,036 company foundations were recorded. April's plunge in numbers is pretty normal, but this shift in records from positive to negative is special. The start-ups have not been as deep since the summer slump in August 2022.

Compared to the previous month, the difference between start-ups and deletions has deteriorated significantly, by 26% to be precise. In itself, it is positive when start-ups are high and deletions are low. However, if the deletions are getting closer and closer to the start-ups and the difference is getting smaller, the bankruptcies have risen disproportionately, which is why we can conclude that the Swiss company landscape is not doing very well at the moment and they are suffering from inflation, the consequences of Corona and the current crises and suffer damage. If we now look at the difference between start-ups and deletions in the last few years in April, it is noticeable that the difference has steadily decreased. Compared to the previous year, it is 14% less and in 2021 it was 29% less.

deletions
April 2023 deletion numbers are 2,198. This is 26% fewer deletions than in the previous month when 2,978 deletions were recorded. Year-on-year comparison shows only a small 1% increase in deletions. Unfortunately, the positive-sounding deletion numbers are not to be rated as positive, because, as explained above, the ratio to the newly founded companies is still disproportionately high.

mutations
Mutations are also at a current record low. 14,300 mutations were registered. That is 17% less than in the previous month and 9% less than in the previous year. As with the start-ups, such low mutation numbers have not been reported since August 2022.

Principality of Liechtenstein
The number of company start-ups has increased again in Liechtenstein. In April 2023, 72 new companies were registered, which is 20% more than in the previous month. The number of cancellations has also increased. 87 new deletions were registered, 23% more than in March 2023. Only the mutations are out of line this month. 916 mutations were reported, 70% fewer than the previous month when a record 3,083 company mutations were reported. The commercial register numbers of Liechtenstein only contain numbers up to April 28, 2023 and can be accessed at www.firmenbuch.li.
