5,036 start-ups - The Swiss commercial register starts spring 2023 with a record high

5,036 new companies were registered in in March 2023. That is 14% more than in the previous month, when 4,429 new companies were still being founded. In general, new entries have been rising steadily since January 2023 and are now recording their annual high so far in March. The past few years have already shown that March is a strong month for the commercial register. In March 2021, one of the highest number of new entries in the last three years was achieved, with 5,047 new companies back then. This result was only surpassed in December 2020, when the highest number of start-ups to date was recorded with 5,075 new company start-ups in the last 3 years.

Deletions
As expected, the deletions in March 2023 are high and, with 2,978 company deletions, are also currently at the high for the year to date. Since the Swiss corporate landscape is currently very active, the number of deletions is also automatically increasing. Still, such a sharp rise of 29% mom and 18% yoy is something to watch for. Such high deletion numbers were last registered in December 2020, when the highest value of 3,042 deletions in the last 3 years was reported.

Mutations
In March 2023, 17,234 mutations were recorded and are therefore also at their high for the year to date. This is 4% more than in the previous month and also 4% more than in the previous year. They are currently at a high level and also reflect the active Swiss economy.

Principality of Liechtenstein
In March 2023, the Principality of Liechtenstein surprised above all with the sharp increase in the number of mutations. 3,083 company changes were registered in March 2023. This is 188% more than in the previous month when 1,069 mutations were reported. Despite the high number of mutations, the number of company start-ups has not increased. In March 2023 only 60 new companies were reported. This is 2% less than in the previous month. The deletions are at a low level with 71 new deletions.
