The Swiss commercial register starts stronger than expected in 2023

The current company start-ups from January 2023 amount to 4,134 across Switzerland. This is 16% less than in the previous month. The year-on-year comparison paints a much more positive picture. In January 2022, 3,812 companies were registered, which is 8% less than in the current month. In general, the number of start-ups has increased steadily over the past three years. In January 2020, 3,711 company foundations were recorded. This is an overall increase of 11%.





deletions
In January 2023, 2,643 deletions were recorded. Compared to the previous month, they even rose by another percent, although the number of start-ups and mutations fell sharply. This means that deletion numbers are currently at a high level. A look at the previous year also confirms this statement, as here too the deletions increased by 13%.

mutations
As already indicated, the number of mutations fell sharply again this month. There were currently 16,705 mutations. This is 11% less than in the previous month. However, as with the start-ups, a year-on-year comparison puts this low into perspective. Compared to the previous year, the numbers have increased by 7%. So we can sum up that the new year got off to a better start than actually expected, as the year-on-year comparisons show.

Principality of Liechtenstein
The Principality of Liechtenstein is also struggling with the usual low at the beginning of the year. After all numbers have risen steadily over the past three months, the new year begins with a damper. The number of start-ups in particular has fallen sharply. To be more precise, 58 start-ups were recorded in January 2023, which is 41% fewer than in the previous month. Mutations are also down 40% compared to the previous month. There are currently 874 mutations recorded. However, it is positive that, unlike in Switzerland, the value of deletions has also fallen. 84 deletions were newly registered, 18% fewer than in December 2022.
