July 09, 2009, Swiss Post is deploying 110 new gas-powered vehicles to ensure environmentally friendly parcel delivery. 40 of them will be used at the newly opened Mägenwil distribution base. The new gas-powered Fiat Ducato, which Swiss Post operates with the support of gasmobil Switzerland, produces 10% fewer environmentally harmful greenhouse gases compared to conventional diesel engines. Overall, Swiss Post uses 140 gas-powered delivery vehicles in Switzerland and thus has the largest gas-powered fleet in the country.
For letter delivery, Swiss Post relies on low-emission electric scooters. Now, with the support of gasmobil Switzerland, it is purchasing 110 environmentally friendly gas- powered vehicles for parcel delivery. Together with the 30 vehicles already in use, it is raising the proportion of alternative drive systems for parcel delivery to 10%. 40 of the new Fiat Ducatos will be used at the Mägenwil distribution base. The new base, which delivers parcels in the Aarau region, is the first distribution base that relies entirely on gas-powered vehicles. Gas – rather than diesel – for a smaller carbon footprint
Compared to the previous diesel-powered delivery fleet, vehicles powered by natural gas emit 10% fewer harmful greenhouse gases. In terms of CO2 equivalents, this corresponds to 59 tonnes of CO2 per year for all 140 vehicles. Another significant advantage of gas- powered engines is the lower output of ozone-generating air pollutants that are harmful to people's health. Swiss Post intends to increase the use of more environmentally friendly engines for its delivery vehicles. These will be introduced gradually at the various delivery regions in Switzerland as part of fleet renewals. Swiss Post aims to reduce its CO2 emissions substantially by 2012
Reducing the environmental impact is a key issue for Swiss Post. This applies in particular to the transport of passengers and goods. Over half of Swiss Post's environmental impact is generated in this area. Swiss Post has been able to reduce its carbon footprint by 8.5% since 2000. Compared to 2007, Swiss Post aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 10% by 2012. Purchasing gas-powered vehicles is one of several measures aimed at achieving this goal. Moreover, Swiss Post already deploys 250 electric scooters for letter delivery and PostBus Switzerland is currently testing and evaluating the use of a type of hybrid bus.
