November 03, 2026, The first shovels of earth have been turned: Stadler starts construction of a new commissioning centre in Weinfelden, Switzerland. The company is investing around CHF 40 million in the site and will create around 80 new jobs. From 2028 onwards, new rail vehicles will be thoroughly tested and prepared for service in Weinfelden.
The productivity of Stadler’s Swiss manufacturing sites has increased steadily in recent years. As a result, the existing commissioning centre in Erlen, Switzerland, has reached its capacity limits. Since further expansion at the Erlen site is only possible to a limited extent, Stadler is building an additional commissioning centre in Weinfelden, Switzerland, to create further capacity. Located close to the company’s headquarters in Bussnang, the new facility will enable Stadler to efficiently test and commission new rail vehicles.
The symbolic kick-off for the construction was carried out by Stadler representatives together with Simon Wolfer, Mayor of Weinfelden, and representatives of the architectural firm MP Architektur AG.
A new chapter for Stadler in Eastern Switzerland
Lucius Gerig, Head of Division Switzerland at Stadler, said: “I am proud that today we are laying the foundation for another chapter of Stadler’s success story in Eastern Switzerland. The fact that we need an additional commissioning centre demonstrates how positively our Swiss sites have developed. At the same time, this investment will create around 80 new jobs in the region. That gives me particular pleasure.”
City of Weinfelden paves the way for test tracks
Simon Wolfer, Mayor of Weinfelden, said: “We recognize Stadler’s importance in terms of value creation in the Middle Thurgau region and beyond. We are pleased that, through the sale of land to Stadler for the test track facility, we were able to pave the way for this project.”
210-metre hall with four tracks
The new commissioning centre will comprise a hall measuring approximately 210 metres in length, 35 metres in width, and 16 metres in height, featuring four indoor tracks and one outdoor track. The facility will also include office space, meeting rooms, staff areas, workshop and storage facilities for final assembly activities, and a paint finishing team.
In addition, electrified test tracks with a total length of 750 metres will be built directly north of the new hall.
Test tracks complete the commissioning centre
The test tracks are an essential part of the commissioning process. They enable vehicles to be tested and operated for the first time. These tests are a prerequisite for subsequent test runs on the public rail network.
Stadler is investing around CHF 40 million in the new centre. The additional positions will primarily be created in the commissioning department, particularly for specialized electricians and automation technicians. Commissioning of the new facility is planned for the first half of 2028.
