National fund-raising day for Haiti, Thursday, 21 January 2010 - Over 20 million Swiss francs pledged in donations

Together with the 4.4 million francs already donated to the Swiss Solidarity account before the fund-raising day, the provisional total has now reached 25’228’008 Swiss francs. In the past, the amount of donations received after a fund-raising day has always been higher than the amount actually pledged, which is why our figure is not yet final.

During the fund-raising day, 120 telephone lines throughout Switzerland were manned by 730 volunteers. In Bern, both Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey and President of the National Council Pascale Bruderer spent an hour on the telephone taking donations. Many of the callers expressed their deep sympathy with the people of Haiti.

Donations ranged between five and over one million Swiss francs. Several organizations supported the fund-raising with amounts up to one million and more.

Donations can still be made online or to postal account 10-15 000-6 (endorsed Haiti). Swiss Solidarity paying-in slips are available in every post office. Holders of a post office account can donate by SMS: send an SMS with the name Haiti and donation to 363 (0.20 CHF/SMS). Example: Haiti 50.
