22.12.2009, BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) welcomes the decision of the Swiss Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) to abolish the time limit on the operating licence for Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM). The decision is highly significant for security of supply in north-west Switzerland and places KKM on an equal legal footing with other nuclear power plants in Switzerland.
In early 2005 BKW submitted an application to the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) for abolition of the time limit, arguing that the limit was imposed on the operating licence purely for political motives. DETEC initially rejected BKW's request on procedural grounds. The Swiss Federal Court asked DETEC to conduct a material assessment of BKW?s application without carrying out a complex procedure under the terms of the Nuclear Energy Act. BKW now notes DETEC's decision with satisfaction.
BKW also emphasises that an ongoing programme of modernisation and preventive plant maintenance is in place with a view to KKM's long-term operation. KKM is setting international standards in terms of retrofitting and renovation. As well as optimising the plant's availability, the measures also help to ensure its safety. The KKM provides a reliable, CO2-free supply of energy to north-west Switzerland. Some 40% of today's electricity requirements in BKW's catchment area are produced by Mühleberg.
