16.06.2008, The Lord’s Taverners cricket team made history by beating the Fly Emirates XI for the first time on home-ground yesterday, in a resounding victory at a sun-drenched Windsor Castle. The team, made up of professional cricketers and celebrities took victory by seven wickets, winning 166 for 3, having bowled the Emirates XI out for 164. Emirates still have an overall lead of 8:4 in the series, but it does mean that the Brits are catching up.

The Lord’s Taverners’ Ian Westwood (Warwickshire Captain) won Man of the Match for his impressive score of 75, which included five sixes. Emirates XI Captain, Javaid Ismail, was man of the match for the other side, notching up a creditable score of 60. Vince Wells was drafted in as replacement Captain for the Taverners when original Captain, Darren Maddy, broke a thumb last week. Exuberant team member and television celebrity Chris Tarrant scored a duck, heading back to the pavilion on just his third ball, but his son Toby brought him some Father’s Day joy, with two wickets including a brilliant catch on the boundary.

The game played in the beautiful setting of Windsor Castle saw 12th Man, and Lord’s Taverners Patron, His Royal Highness, Prince Philip in attendance; he met the teams and joined the 200 odd guests for lunch. It was a particularly busy day at Windsor Castle, which elsewhere played host to The President of the USA, George Bush.

As well as the sporting fun, there was a more serious side to the afternoon, and Executive Vice–Chairman of Emirates Airline and Group, Maurice Flanagan, presented a specially adapted minibus to students of The Walnuts School in Milton Keynes. The school caters for 90 children with social and communication difficulties, many also have autism. The minibus will be used for sporting and educational trips and will also provide a crucial chance for the children to gain experiences and participate in sporting and recreational activities they might not otherwise enjoy.

Maurice Flanagan, a regular attendee at the match, said: “We have had an absolutely fantastic day here today, in the presence of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh. Our boys did us proud but the Taverners side was just too formidable for them today, with a bowling attack spearheaded by Andrew Caddick and some fabulous batting efforts. We must not forget that this is a charitable event, and it was an honour to donate a minibus to such a worthy cause as The Walnuts School.”

Matthew Patten, Chief Executive of The Lord’s Taverners said: “Today highlighted the dual purpose of the Lord’s Taverners: to enjoy excellent sporting events, and to support worthwhile causes. The generous support of Emirates Airline for The Lord’s Taverners has positively changed the lives of thousands of children with special needs for the better, both in the UK and for 3 special needs schools in Dubai. We hope that all our friends at Emirates who have travelled from around the world to be here enjoyed their day and we thank them for helping to fund one of our much-needed minibuses for children with disabilities.”

Emirates has a great affinity with cricket and as an Official Partner of the ICC, Emirates has rights to all ICC major tournaments including the 2011 and 2015 ICC Cricket World Cups, ICC Champions Trophy, ICC World Twenty20, ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, ICC Under-19 World Cup, ICC Intercontinental Cup and the ICC Women’s World Cup.

Through the partnership with the ICC, Emirates will continue its sponsorship of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Referees; with the Fly Emirates logo being displayed prominently on the umpires’ clothing at all ICC events until 2015.

Emirates is the Official Airline to Cricket Australia and was the sponsor of the successful Australian Cricket Team, who landed their third World Cup victory in 2007.
