October 28, 2026, The Cantonal Governments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, as well as the French civil aviation authority (DGAC), have approved the landside extension of EuroAirport’s terminal, with construction investments totalling just over 157 million euros. This marks an important step toward the implementation of this key modernisation project. The terminal extension is the flagship project of a multi-year investment program through which EuroAirport intends to sustainably improve service quality. Construction is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2027 and is expected to be completed toward the end of 2031. The project will be fully funded by EuroAirport.

Landside terminal extension: a flagship project of the investment program

Modernising infrastructure and improving the travel experience are among EuroAirport’s key strategic priorities. As part of a multi-year investment program, the Airport is investing a total of more than 600 million euros in various infrastructure projects over a period of seven years. About half of these funds will be used for measures to improve service quality.

The landside extension of the terminal, with a total investment of just over 157 million euros, is the flagship project of this quality initiative. Its purpose is to comprehensively modernise existing infrastructure, optimise operational processes and ensure sustainability in terms of improving service quality as well as the passenger and visitors’ experience.

Simpler Passenger Routing and an enhanced Passenger Experience

The project includes the construction of a new building covering approximately 14 000 m² on the terminal’s publicly accessible eastern façade as well as extensive renovation work over a surface of approximately 15 000 m² within the existing building.

In the future, security checks will be consolidated in a new central building and Passenger Routing will be designed to be simpler and more intuitive. At the same time, groundwork is being laid to make catering options and the duty-free area more appealing. Terminal access will also be reorganised as part of the construction work.

The project focuses on improving the quality of the existing infrastructure. The landside terminal extension will not create any additional capacity for aircraft handling.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027

With the approval of the relevant authorities in France and Switzerland, an important step was taken in the approval procedure. According to the provisions set out in the Franco-Swiss Treaty of 1949 on which EuroAirport is based, the investment decision made by the Airport’s Board of Directors must be approved by the relevant authorities in Switzerland and France. On the Swiss side, this is carried out by the federal government in consultation with the two cantons and on the French side, by the DGAC.

EuroAirport is continuing to move forward with preparations for the project's implementation. Construction is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2027 and is expected to be completed towards the end of 2031.

During the planning and implementation phases, great emphasis is placed on high-quality and sustainable infrastructure. The purpose of the EMT Project is to achieve a high level of energy efficiency, to obtain a BREEAM “Excellent” certification and, in particular, to minimise the building’s carbon footprint. The goal is to systematically incorporate environmental considerations into the planning and implementation of the project.

With the landside terminal extension, EuroAirport is reaching an important milestone in its long-term modernisation strategy and is making targeted investments in order to enhance the travel experience for its passengers.
