Contactless payment facilities

September 17, 2010, By late November, more than 1,000 Valora retail outlets (k kiosk, avec. P&B) will be equipped with the latest generation of payment terminals. These state-of-the-art devices not only support traditional card-based cashless payment, thus meeting a widespread public need, but also enable customers with the latest generation of credit cards to use the contactless payment feature to pay for their purchases.

The processing time for these contactless payments, which are used for smaller-value transactions, is now less than one second, thus significantly accelerating the payment process. Contactless payments, which require no signature or PIN input, are currently possible for all transaction amounts of 40 Swiss francs or less.

After successfully carrying out tests at some 50 k kiosk pilot sites, Valora began installing the new generation of payment terminals at all its outlets in early September. The roll-out is scheduled to be completed by late November.

Contactless card payment also brings a number of security benefits, since it enables customers to make purchases at any time of day without carrying cash, while at the same reducing the amount of cash Valora holds at its outlets.

In addition to enhanced security, greater efficiency is a key advantage of the new system. Contactless card payments are extremely quick, and are thus up to 60% faster than cash payments. This enables customers to be served even faster, thus significantly reducing waiting times during rush hours.

This strategic initiative is being carried out jointly with the Aduno group. In addition to equipping Valora’s retail outlets with payment terminals, Aduno will in future also handle its card acceptance processes.
